I had a busy weekend, so I just made it under the wire getting EP231 uploaded. Again we have more songs performed by the "Don't Be A Drag" Queen. The original song was Easter Parade. I forgot to put that in the footnote in frame 8. Also frame 8 pokes a little fun at how the Gay Pride Parade's name has gotten longer over the years. Everyone needs to be included, so add your group's name to the list in frame 8 !!
Summer vacation is almost here, so here's the update schedule for the next little while:
- Aug 1st - another in the series of "Faces" compliations.
- Aug 8th - NO COMIC
- Aug 15th - a guest comic by a young, up and coming artist. You'll see it here first !
- Aug 22nd - NO COMIC
- Aug 29th - we resume our regular programming.
I'm late blogging again. It's been baking hot here in Ottawa for the last week or more. Today it cooled off a bit, but we're going back into the 30's (Centigrade) tomorrow. I love the summer heat, but thank god for air conditioning for sleeping at night. I had fun with EP230. The phrase "get along little dykie" is a distortion of "get along little dogie". A dogie is a motherless or neglected calf. A term from the folk songs of the old west. Speaking of the old west, I went horseback riding last Sunday. We had friends in from Montreal and took them riding in the Gatineau Hills (insert Brokeback Mountain joke here). We had a beautiful sunny day. It was the first time I ever took a horse through water (we didn't have much water on our farm). We were up to our boots in water as we crossed a slough (pond). One horse wanted to lay down in the water. Fortunately, it wasn't my horse. One of the guys from Montreal got a little more water than he bargined for. Later we had lunch at Wakefield (all of us walking slightly bowlegged). As we lunched, we watched the old steam train come into town bringing the tourists. A really good time.
Oh conflict, conflict, conflict in EP229. Looks like Phil will have to go to the Gay Pride parade after all, or will he sneek out of it some how. We'll just have to wait and see. Such suspense.
Summer vacation is getting nearer, so I'll be posting the vacation schedule soon. While I'm gone, I have some comic treats arranged, so there will be some updates while I'm gone. I can hardly wait to get out to the cabin. Last weekend, we had hail in the Wakaw Lake area with stones as large as golf balls. One area apparently had baseball sized stones. We had very little damage, but the town of Wakaw and some other cabins along the lake got hit hard. I'm sure the crops in the area where heavily damaged too. That makes for a bad growing season. Yikes.
Sorry about the delay of today's comic. I uploaded the file with the wrong date in the file name. It appeared on July 4th 1906 instead of 2006.
EP228 turned out to be one of my favourites. The idea came to me while I was shaving. I get most of my good ideas while I'm shaving or showering (the creative process is a very mysterious thing). But the idea of history changing if gay people weren't excluded had so many possibilities. For instance, the first sound recording was done by Thomas Edison reciting "Mary Had A Little Lamb" onto tinfoil wrapped around a drum. Well if Edison was a gay man, the first recording would have been a big production musical number like the one I attempted to draw. As for great leaders, Winston Churchill as a lesbian really cracked me up. I can't draw caricatures, but with the speech and microphone, it's pretty easy to tell who it is (notice the Sally Rogers black bow in the hair). The lunar landing with the first man on the moon in drag was also a knee slapper. The heels and purse (matching, of course) were all that was needed to complete the drawing. Anyways, more fun with history.
